Contango and backwardation

Contango is when futures trade above spot, with later expiries priced higher. Backwardation is the opposite: futures trade below spot.

These terms describe the shape of the futures curve, meaning the prices of contracts across expiry dates. In crypto, contango is the normal state, because traders pay a premium for leveraged long exposure and capital has a cost. Backwardation appears when the demand to short or hedge outweighs the demand to go long, typically during panics or after large liquidation events.

Example

BTC spot is $60,000, the one-month future is $60,500 and the three-month future is $61,500: the curve is in contango. After a crash, spot is $50,000, the one-month future is $49,700 and the three-month is $49,400: the curve is in backwardation, and perpetual funding has probably turned negative as well.

Why it matters

The curve's shape is a quick read on sentiment and leverage. Steep contango shows eager longs and expensive carry; backwardation shows fear or heavy hedging. For anyone holding dated futures, it also decides whether rolling to the next expiry costs money or earns it.

Common mistake

Reading backwardation as a sure buy signal. It shows that shorts and hedgers dominate right now, not that the bottom is in. Combine it with price structure and your own setup rules.

FAQ

Is contango bullish?
Mild contango is normal. Very steep contango means longs are paying a lot for leverage, which is a sign of crowded positioning rather than a clean bullish signal.
How do contango and backwardation relate to perpetual funding?
When perpetuals trade above spot, funding is positive and longs pay, much like contango. When they trade below, funding turns negative and shorts pay, much like backwardation.
Why does crypto usually trade in contango?
Demand for leveraged long exposure is persistent, and borrowing money to hold spot has a cost, so futures tend to price in a premium over spot.
