Liquidity sweep

A quick move beyond an obvious high or low that triggers the stop orders clustered there, often followed by a reversal.

Stops pile up just beyond visible swing highs, swing lows and range edges. When price trades into that zone, the stops turn into market orders and add sudden volume. Large traders can use that flow to fill big positions in the opposite direction. The result is a sharp wick beyond the level and a fast return, which price-action traders call a sweep.

Example

Equal lows sit at $145 on SOL, with many long stops just below. Price drops to $143.80 in one candle, filling those stops and liquidating some longs, then closes back at $146.20. A trader who waited for the close back above $145 buys at $146.30 with a stop at $143.50, below the sweep low, and targets the range high at $152, about 2R.

Why it matters

Understanding sweeps explains why stops at the most obvious level get hit before price moves as expected. It also gives you a setup with a clear invalidation point: the extreme of the sweep.

Common mistake

Calling every wick a sweep after the fact. Sometimes price breaks a level and keeps going. Define the confirmation you need, such as a close back inside the range, and log every sweep trade to see how often it really works.

FAQ

Is a stop hunt deliberate?
Sometimes larger players push price into stop clusters, but often it is simply price seeking liquidity. The effect on your stop is the same either way.
Where does liquidity usually sit?
Above equal or recent highs, below equal or recent lows, around round numbers and just beyond the edges of a range.
How do I protect my stop from sweeps?
Place it beyond the level with a buffer based on volatility, or at the point where the setup is truly invalid rather than at the most visible high or low.
