FOMO

Fear of missing out: the urge to enter a trade because price is moving fast and you do not want to miss it, rather than because your setup is there.

FOMO usually appears after a large candle, a burst of social media hype or a coin that has already risen sharply. The trader enters late, without the planned entry, often with a wide or missing stop and an oversized position. It is one of the most common emotional errors in crypto, where moves are fast and very visible.

Example

A coin rises 25% in four hours. You had no plan for it, but you buy at the top of a green candle at $1.25 with a stop at $1.10, because it looks like it will keep going. Price falls back to $1.08 the same day and your stop fills with slippage at $1.08. The planned 1R loss becomes 1.13R, on a trade that was never in your playbook.

Why it matters

FOMO trades tend to have poor entries, poor risk-reward and no edge. Once you tag them in a journal, they often turn out to be a large share of your losses, which makes them one of the easiest leaks to fix.

Common mistake

Believing the next move is the one you cannot afford to miss. Markets offer setups every day. Missing a move costs nothing; chasing it with a bad entry costs real money.

Put it into practice

FAQ

How do I stop FOMO trading?
Write your setups down and trade only those, use price alerts instead of watching charts all day, and tag FOMO trades in your journal so you can see what they really cost.
Is buying a breakout always FOMO?
No. A planned breakout entry with a defined stop is a setup. FOMO is entering without a plan because price is already moving.
Why is FOMO so strong in crypto?
Moves are large, the market never closes and gains are shared loudly on social media, so the feeling of being left behind is constant.
